Beschreibung des Verlags
A museum visitor is drawn to GOLGOTHA, a grotesque, unforgettable painting of a crucified man ringed by pink, almost-human dancers and executioners, all rendered with eerie, living force. Beneath the image, the chilling inscription—"I sold my soul that I might paint a living picture"—suggests a forbidden bargain behind its creation and sets the tone for a tale of art, obsession, and supernatural ambition. After learning from a guard that the work was brought in by a disturbed artist rejected by the museum, the narrator takes the painting home, where its power only intensifies. In the dim light of his apartment, the tortured figure and shadowy attendants seem to shift and watch, invading his thoughts and sleep. A strange dream of Richard Mansfield turns sinister, and the narrator awakens to find the pink dancers physically in his room, surrounding his bed with rubbery, inhuman hands. He struggles free, flees through the apartment, and only when he switches on the light do the creatures vanish, leaving him shaken and wondering whether the painting has crossed into reality.
