In the summer of 1897, the Klondike gold rush sends men north like compass needles. Five travelers push up the Yukon, but a storm, drifting ice and a wrecked boat leave them stranded far from Dawson, with winter closing in and eight months between them and the nearest trace of civilization. MacCann fights to steer the Tulare through the gale; the Kentuckian keeps the crew pulling, while Potts’s nerve gives way and the Boy finds what cheer he can in berries beneath the snow. They have provisions, a bleak camp and a wilderness that seems to hold nothing else. Can this unlikely party endure the winter—and what will the frozen North bring them?
