The Man Between

New York and London: an American girl, an English title, a marriage arranged across the Atlantic, and the man who stands between. Barr lost her husband and three sons to yellow fever in Texas in a single epidemic, went to New York a widow with three daughters and no money, and wrote some eighty novels to keep them. She knew what a woman without means was worth in either country. Fifty-nine plates, from Henry Sargent's The Dinner Party to William Merritt Chase's portraits, trace the social comedy of courtship and marriage across two continents.
