Seven days before Christmas, the town of Wintersbach lies beneath snow and glowing winter lights.



But Christmas does not feel warm to everyone.



Ten-year-old Jonas Brand lives with his mother above a small bakery and has learned to count every coin. Clara Winter, on the other hand, has almost everything money can buy — except the time and attention of her parents.



When a snowstorm leads Jonas to a mysterious Lantern House above the town, he meets the elderly lantern-maker Kasimir and discovers an extraordinary flame.



A light that grows brighter whenever someone gives without expecting anything in return.



And weaker whenever a gift becomes a bargain.



Soon Jonas and Clara find themselves caught inside a legend far older than Wintersbach itself.



Because a stranger in a grey coat is watching them.



Valentin does not believe in selfless kindness.



For a hundred Christmases, he has been convinced that every gift carries a price, every act of generosity hides a motive, and sooner or later everyone begins to keep score.



When an unnatural cold spreads across Wintersbach, doors begin to close and one light after another goes dark.



Then Jonas and Clara are faced with an impossible choice:



Should they protect the last remaining flame?



Or give it to the very person who has spent a century trying to destroy it?



**The idea of the "Borrowed Light" was inspired by Austria's Peace Light tradition:** a special Christmas flame lit in Bethlehem, brought to Austria and then passed from person to person, across borders and into countries around the world.



From this real symbol of sharing grew a fictional Christmas legend about a flame whose true power lies not in keeping it — but in passing it on.
