The Mule

Gravely injured on the jungle floor after plummeting off a precipice with her mule, Karen Rhea’s situation was dire. After leaving the comfort of her suburban D.C. home to serve alongside her husband to provide critical dental care to the indigenous people of southern Mexico, Karen became the one in need. Their medical mission team lacked any ability to get her back to civilization to receive the care she so desperately required.


A Chinentec guide began the arduous journey to his village, climbing mountain peaks and traversing white water rapids to summon help. Even if Karen could be transported to the village, what then? This was a Sunday. Bush planes simply didn’t fly on Sundays. There were no roads and no communications. And time was running out.
