The New Machiavelli

"The New Machiavelli" was written by H.G. Wells and published in serialised form in The English Review in 1910, published as a novel in 1911. Its lead character, Richard "Dick" Remington, has a lifelong passion for "statecraft" and dreams of reforming the social and political systems of England. His political career is wrecked by a scandalous affair, he is forced to abandon his political aspirations and life he knows to escape to Italy, where he writes his apologies and reflections, which is this novel.
