INTRODUCTION Fifteen years ago, I cowrote an introduction to a special issue on the emergence of theory-driven empirical research in operations and supply chain management (Melnyk and Handheld 1998). At the time, we noted that OM/SCM researchers needed to focus on research issues that were directly pertinent to practitioners, yet were unequivocally linked to theory.
