About the author
Soman Chainani belives in fairy tales even more than the children of Gavaldon do. While studying at Harvard, he practically created his own ‘fairy tale’ major and wrote his thesis on why evil women make such irresistible fairy-tale villains.
Soman is also an acclaimed screenwriter, whose films have played at more than 150 film festivals around the world, winning more than 30 jury and audience prizes.
When he’s not telling stories or teaching in New York City, Soman is a die-hard tennis player who never lost a first-round match for ten years. Then he started writing The School for Good and Evil. Now he loses all the time.

At first glance, Chainani's debut appears to resemble the trend-following herd. There's the secret school that sorts its students into apparently predestined categories, courtesy of J.K. Rowling. There's the knowing, slightly shocking narration, full of farts and greasy hair, borrowed from Roald Dahl via Lemony Snicket. But Chainani's story gradually takes on dimension. Sophie and Agatha are plucked from their hometown of Gavaldon, where children are voracious readers of fairy tales. A skeletal bird drops them at the School for Good and Evil, populated by the living embodiments of these tales princesses, princes, and villains in training. The girls soon discover, however, that these fledgling stereotypes have never read the stories. Sophie and Agatha are the only "Readers" in their class shunned, mocked, but also feared. While the notion that conventions of good and evil don't tell the whole truth is hardly new, exploring the middle ground moves Chainani's novel out of its own ruts and, in the process, shows readers a hyperactively imaginative way to leave black-and-white thinking behind. Hey ihr Lieben,
Heute kommt wieder eine neue Rezension von mir. Diesmal zu „The School for Good and Evil-Es kann nur eine geben“. Das Buch habe ich von @vorablesen zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen😍. Vielen Dank hierfür💖. Ich habe die neue Ausgabe vom Ravensburger Verlag gelesen, welche extra für den Film, welcher am 19.10.2022 erschienen ist, neu aufgelegt wurde. Ich hatte das Buch schon länger im Auge und habe mich deshalb umso mehr über den ersten Band gefreut🥰. Aber kommen wir zunächst zur Inhaltsgabe:
Sophie hat einen großen Traum: Sie will Prinzessin werden, ausgebildet an der School for Good and Evil. Viele Mädchen haben große Angst vor der geheimnisvollen Schule, doch sie will eine der Ausgewählten sein. Doch der Schulmeister hat andere Pläne für sie: Anstatt sie an die Schule der Guten zu bringen, schickt er sie auf die Schule des Bösen und ihre beste Freundin Agatha, welche für alle eine Hexe zu sein scheint auf die Schule des Guten. Am Ende ist nichts mehr, wie es war und Sophie weiß nicht mehr, welcher Seite sie angehören möchte….
Kommen wir nun aber zur Bewertung🙃:
Ich habe angefangen und konnte nicht mehr aufhören😍. Die Geschichte von Sophie und Agatha ist soo schön und wundervoll erzählt🫠. Es Mangel an nichts: weder an Fantasy, noch am Märchenteil. Es zur so schön der Geschichte der beiden zu folgen, dass man fast die Zeit vergessen hat. Anfangs beginnt alles als einfache Verwechslung, schnell entwickelt sich daraus jedoch mehr. Die tiefschichtigen Erzählungsstränge geben dem ganzen noch einen gewissen Clou, welcher durch das Ende einen würdigen Abschluss findet. Ich selbst kann es gar nicht erwarten die Fortsetzung zu lesen und freue mich schon sehr auf Band 2!
