This book, translated from Norwegian, gives the account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1912, led by Roald Amundsen. The expedition launched around the same time as the English Terra Nova expedition that proved fatal to Captain Scott and many others, so the achievements of the Norwegian expedition, who were the first to reach the geographical South Pole, have always been overshadowed by those tragic events. The Norwegian team have, in recent years, been applauded for their expert use of skis and sledges to produce fast and efficient travel across the rugged land.
