In Italy, the Greek city of Taras has resolved to resist Roman encroachment. The warlord, Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, will lead their forces but what are his motives? With war in Italy imminent, the factions governing the mighty African City of Carthage conspire to extend their city's influence in Sicily. Encouraged by his Syracusan captain Hieron, Pyrrhus contemplates an alliance with Syracuse, the leading Greek city in Sicily. Meanwhile, as the Greek cities of Sicily struggle to preserve their freedom, the convoluted web of intrigue spun by the Carthaginian general Himalgo and his agent Calisto engulfs the prostitute Tansia, her protector, Tanos and her mysterious lover.
