This interlinked group of stories anticipates Joyce's 'Dubliners' by years and prefigures in many respects not only that book but its successor a Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. In this sequence of linked short stories, mostly set among the rural poor in the west of Ireland, who are locked in an eternal struggle with their parish priests.
