The victim, a childhood friend named Jennifer Farrington has vanished, and this is just the beginning of Brandon's troubles.

In another world, Charles Winters lies in a jail cell, arrested for vagrancy in a city unlike any we know. In this world, people upload fantasy tiles directly into their brains, which offer rich and realistic fantasy experiences.
A strange and beautiful woman bails him out of jail and tells him a strange story. Charles is skeptical, but the woman seems sincere, and, inexpliclibly familiar to Charles.

She leads him on a wild adventure across the United States and back, while Brandon Winchester faces a trial for his life, remembering no details of the crme, and having fallen in love with his alleged victim.
