A well-known and popular orator of the time, Ingersoll held forth on a variety of subjects, from Thomas Paine to politics, though his favorite topics were agnosticism and the value of the family. He was famed for his radical views on everything from religion to civil rights, and was a friend of Walt Whitman. In fact, he delivered the eulogy at the famed poet's funeral.
