For 175 years, the YMCA has been woven into the fabric of American life. From crowded nineteenth-century cities to small towns, college campuses, military bases, immigrant neighborhoods, suburban communities, and places of national crisis, the Y has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of the people it serves. Since its inauspicious beginnings in Boston in 1851, the Young Men's Christian Association of the United States of America, better known as the YMCA of the USA or simply The Y, has pioneered a staggering list of social innovations across all parts of American life, from recreation to education to civil rights.

The YMCA: 175 Years of Innovation That Shaped America reveals the surprising influence of an organization that helped pioneer public libraries, summer camps, night schools, vocational education, organized recreation, youth leadership programs, community health initiatives, and many of the sports Americans play today. Basketball and volleyball were invented at the YMCA. Its "Spirit/Mind/Body" philosophy led to the creation of bodybuilding, aerobics and modern concepts of holistic health. Its model for childcare became a bedrock of the American economy, enabling millions of parents to expand work opportunities. Generations found affordable housing, education, fellowship, and opportunity beneath its roof.

In the process, the Y has grown and evolved to become the number one nonprofit charitable organization in the United States with more than $5 billion in annual revenue, serving more than 13 million members through nearly 2,600 branches in 900 local associations across 10,000 local communities. Though the U.S. operation is its largest, by far, the Y also operates in 120 countries across the globe, engaging in a vast array of activities that range from running a university in Mexico City to battling Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The YMCA's history also reflects the nation's unfinished journey. Its story encompasses service during war and disaster, struggles over race and equality, the advancement of women in leadership, support for immigrants and refugees, and the ongoing work of creating communities where everyone can belong. Today, the Y is evolving to address issues of mental health, isolation, loneliness, polarization and civic engagement while developing sustainable solutions and lifestyle programs that ensure a healthy future for all.
