The Young Woodsman

“I want to be what father was,” Frank Kingston tells his mother—and her face turns pale. At fifteen, he is ready to leave school for the Canadian lumber woods; she fears what that choice may cost him.

In Calumet, a growing village on a tributary of the Ottawa, the forest is both a source of work and a wilderness retreating before the spread of settlement. Frank is strong, eager, and hungry for the adventures he has read about, but his father’s death has brought grown-up responsibilities sooner than he expected. As he sets his heart on a woodsman’s life, his mother must face the prospect of sending her only son into the dangers of the lumber camps. Can Frank’s courage and ambition carry him safely into the life he longs for?
