They Told Me Not to Sing is the story of one womans struggle to make a different and better life for herself. Part one describes what it is like growing up with an alcoholic mother and is a story of survival, rejection, hopes, and dreams. At age eleven, through days of bleakness and hope, she turns to the movies and is transported to new lands, shown a whole different way of life, and introduced to new ideas and people. Part two is an account of Jennifer Wylers journey as a military wife. As a young girl she meets her Prince Charming who she sees as a pillar of strength, rather than a boy scarcely nineteen years old. With his ring on her finger, she believes her dreams have come true and her prayers have been answered. Part three, set in the late 70s in Toronto, is the story of Jennifers personal evolution when, at forty-three years old, she leaves a sheltered and privileged life to go to nursing school. Jennifer writes openly and intimately about her dreams and aspirations, her disappointments and failures, and of how she becomes transformed as a result of her awakening consciousness and the recognition of her own Higher Power. This is a moving account of the strength one woman finds to overcome failure and to build and rebuild a life.
