Josie's longtime neighbor, Chance Braxton, made a promise to Josie's mother on her death bed that he would look out for Josie. Chance has feelings for Josie, but knows that she's hung up on his little brother, Dev, since he's been the one to dry her tears every time Dev broke her heart. Determined to care for her and hopeful that she will learn to love him, Chance reveals that he is the one who holds the loans on her ranch and proposes marriage as a mutually beneficial financial arrangement. Josie reluctantly agrees, though she thinks that Chance's real motivation is to gain access to her family's land. Chance and Josie soon succumb to their mutual attraction, but communication issues and insecurities run deep, resulting in mutual misunderstandings.
