Understanding Péguy

For some, Péguy is “an anarchist who put holy water in his oil”; for others, a dangerous rebel whose “head is revolution”. A socialist and a Catholic, a pious poet and a raging polemicist, Péguy was a man whose path was sometimes chaotic, but always bouncy.
Few authors have had as controversial a posterity as he. One hundred years after his death, it’s time to do justice to this unclassifiable thinker, who was little-known in his day, but who has so much to say to our own.
Yves Rouvière’s drawings give substance to the words, “incarnating the spiritual”, according to one of Péguy’s cherished intuitions.
 
Born in 1988, Marie Boeswillwald embodies the younger generation of Péguyist researchers.
 
A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and author of several books, Claire Daudin is currently in charge of Gallimard’s re-edition of Péguy’s Œuvres poétiques et dramatiques in the “Bibliothèque de la Pléiade” collection. She has also been President of Amitié Charles Péguy since 2010.
