Mei Tanaka can't remember what she did

Mei walks through the new village of Daak, Alaska, and ignores the whispers. The whispers are respectful enough. They call her the Mediator here. She's the one you bring problems to. And a village of shifters and humans are bound to have problems.

She likes being the Mediator, just fine.

But there are other whispers when they think she can't hear. They call her La Loba, Mu Lang, Mesu Okami — just words for a she wolf in Spanish, Mandarin and Japanese. Sometimes she hears bruja — witch. But the names seem to mean something more than just descriptive. They're names, it feels like. Names of something they fear.
