In a patriarchal culture rich with tradition and belief, the outlawed dowry still plagues India. Despite its ban in 1961, many husbands and their families still cling to the idea that a woman is not enough to make a marriage. The bride’s family should be made poorer by her marriage, and the groom’s family should prosper. A woman’s worth is solely the fortune she can bring to her new family. And the unspoken toll of this belief system is abuse and even death.
This is the story of Sonal, a bright young Indian woman from the small town of Odisha. She falls in love with Rajiv, the wealthy son of a politically prominent Minister. She is drawn in by his cunning charm and kind words that veil the truth. Little does she know that behind the glamourous and benevolent exterior of Rajiv’s family lies corruption and cruelty.
A victim of their faulty belief system, Sonal sets out to free herself and wage a war against a centuries-old custom and tradition.
