Including a background of actual Mexican history, the novel weaves its tale through the eyes of Ix’mal, a Maya nagual (shaman) who witnesses key proceedings and is instrumental in bringing resolution to a series of disparate events that fulminate into chaos. The subplots maneuver themselves through time manipulation, murder, Maya deities, sabotage, kidnapping, betrayal and revenge, all set against the background of a category 5 hurricane and the equally disastrous effects history has had on the indigenous population of Mexico.
