Well, today we are not, but back in the years there was a huge difference between men and women. Men were considered as fighters, protectors, leaders and people who have right to develop themselves. Women, on the other hand, lived in the shadows, always in the role of a lady in distress. They had no right to fight, educate or have thoughts on their own. They were quiet and there voice wasn’t heard.

Margaret Fuller was a woman and a great writer, at a time when women were not allowed to go to college, who fought for equality among genders. In this book, she emphasizes the need of equality in marriage, employment, and the right of women to make their own life choices and speak for themselves. She believed that in order to have a true union in the marriage, each person must be an individual and to depend on him/herself.
