Comments and views are regularly solicited on the role of Pakistan Army in national affairs. It is not uncommon to expect questions like: Is the Army or the armed forces merely meant to protect the territorial borders of the country or do they have a broader mandate, like defending the national ideology and upholding the religious ethos and social values of our society? Is the military duty bound to take part in nation building activities? Is it morally bound to intervene in the political affairs of the country to save it from internal upheaval, turmoil, chaos or collapse? Should it obey all orders issued by the civilian authorities or should it refuse orders it considers illegal? What after all are the correct parameters of its employment in various situations?
