Arrian of Nicomedia (c. 86/89-c. after 146/160 AD), was a Greek historian, public servant, military commander, and philosopher of the Roman period. Although written more than 400 years after Alexander's death, Arrian's Campaigns of Alexander is the most reliable account of Alexander from antiquity. Arrian's personal experience as a commander gave him unique insights into the life of the world's greatest conqueror. He discusses Alexander's suppression of the Theban rebellion, his defeat of Persia, and his campaigns through Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. After 12 years of campaigning, Alexander the Great controlled an empire stretching from the Balkans and the Adriatic Sea in the west to modern-day Pakistan to the east.
