Foundation hasn’t become one of the most influential science fiction novels of all time just because it’s so mind-blowingly smart, though it is that. The first book in Isaac Asimov’s classic series is a riveting story of political intrigue. Thousands of years in the future, when humanity has spread throughout space to millions of planets, a man named Hari Seldon uses mathematics to predict that the Galactic Empire is destined to fall. Hoping to preserve knowledge and order during the chaotic millennium that will follow, Hari sets up a final colony on a desolate planet and calls it the Foundation. Asimov is playing the long game here—the story unfolds over multiple generations—and it’s fascinating to find out how Hari’s predictions do and don’t come true. Veteran narrator Scott Brick has a rich baritone that suits this epic tale. Once you dive into Asimov’s rich future history, you’ll never want to leave.
