Poet Dana Gioa is the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and the author of several collections of poetry, including Interrogations at Noon. He has translated the poetry of Italian Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale. His article "Can Poetry Matter?" first published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1991 and later in book form, caused a debate in literary circles and earned him a reputation as provocateur among some people.
