Volcanologist Lenaia Talavera couldn't save her uncle in time. Reeling from grief and guilt, she directs her anger at God and distances herself from everyone, including her longtime boyfriend. Burying her feelings in work, Lenaia travels to Mt. Rainier to investigate an act of sabotage. When she gets teamed up with her ex-boyfriend, he makes his intentions clear: winning her back at all cost. Before she can process his confession, the trip takes a dangerous turn—a woman from a nearby town is found dead among the pines.

On the other side of the country, Travis Perego wants to support his girlfriend in her grief, but he won't stand on the sidelines while she slips away from him. Travis races to the mountain to fight for her, only to find out she's missing, along with her ex-boyfriend.
