Lady Anne Barnard lived at the centre of Georgian society, but she was not respectable.

What defined this poet and musician, artist and hostess, was defiance of convention. She rejected suitors, travelled alone to observe the French Revolution and married a lowly army officer, with whom she withdrew to Africa and achieved spectacular success.

In researching her extraordinary life, Stephen Taylor was given access to her papers, and returned to her former home, Paradise, in the land below Table Mountain.
