Part One Some years ago, I had the somewhat optimistic idea of writing a paper on the resonances and similarities between hard-boiled detective fiction (a sub-category within that broader genre) and existential thought and therapy. I have held a long fascination with this genre of fiction--and subsequently discovered that I am in good company. Sartre and Merleau-Ponty were, it seems, all-consuming afficionados (Hayman, 1986).
