In the spring of 2015 Melinda Watson at RawFoundationUK talked with Andy Hughes about supporting their Making Waves 'Plastic-Free Festival' Campaign at Glastonbury Festival. These photographs are part of Hughes’ continuing study of waste and in particular plastic. Andy Hughes' photographic depictions of plastic and other human waste along the coastal fringes explore the tension between attraction and repulsion, they are photographic expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in our throwaway society. In 1989 he began to photograph waste material that he found along the beaches close to where he learned to surf, he is one of the first artist /photographers who explored plastic as metaphor, subject and pollutant. This new series Glastonbury Opus1 is part of a developing and continuing series of photographs, Opus2 will be released in 2016.
