I Am Not Your Golliwogg

Nuku, a young girl from a mixed-racial background, is cast in the role of a Golliwogg at her nursery school's annual Christmas concert. Her mother, Winnie, objects and insists that she be cast in another role. The teacher then assigns her the role of a cricket bat. Nuku is still unhappy as all the other children in her class, are assigned the enchanting roles of beautiful characters. The cricket bat is sewn onto her calico dress. On the day of the concert, Nuku is mocked by the other school children as she is about to enter the stage and they chant - Golliwogg, Golliwogg, Golliwogg! She chokes up during her performance, her voice quivers, she suffers a bout of stage fright, until her sister comes to her rescue. They exit the concert hall with Nuku in tears. Later, their mother sits them down and educates them about the Golliwogg and what is has come to represent. However, this appears to have been too late as Nuku is haunted throughout her life by that one experience. And, although she has an angelic voice, she refuses to pursue a career in music as she fears public scorn and ridicule.
