Publisher Description

What is the impact on a soldier who has a close encounter with death? What physical and emotional scars does a soldier bring home from a warzone? And what does the soldier maintain from these extreme experiences?

Marked for Life tells the spectacular story of the tattoos soldiers from The Danish Royal Life Guard got before, during and after their missions abroad. More than 60 soldiers show and tell the texts and images, they have marked in ink on their body to maintain their personal stories from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans.

Marked for Life is photographed by world renowned photographer and World Press Photo-winner Jan Grarup.

    A very special book

Tattoos are not for me, and what are these soldiers – that was my thoughts when I saw this book.
I promise you that I became aware of both when I read the book - marked for life. Tattoos are not just the result of a drinking binge in the city, but a deliberate act celebrating their soldier’s life – that was my first surprise.
The soldiers who speak in this book are thoughtful young men who know what they are getting into. They are reflective of their work and the world. It makes me proud to be a Dane.
Finally, Jan Grarups pictures are a class by itself.

    A rare

A rare look into the way in which modern soldiers are choosing to mark respect for each other and to remember bonds forged in combat...
Soldiers do not readily accept outsiders... And are often very private about their experiences... Jan Grarup has done more than photograph individuals and their tattoos... He has been accepted into a brotherhood to make images of people that have stories that would otherwise be unknown to all but those involved... Jan's work over many years in war zones and areas of natural disaster have meant that he is no stranger to the fatigue, stress and trauma that soldiers experience daily... Through this common ground Jan has been able to make images that would otherwise be impossible to make...
I had the pleasure of speaking with several soldiers that Jan photographed... It was obvious that they appreciated the work and passion that went into making this book...
The text that accompanies the images tells the stories and thoughts behind the tattoos... Stories that would otherwise be for the most be untold...
