Morning Child

From the author of the “exquisite” (New York Times) Margot Affair comes a powerful testament to human connection, when a chance meeting between two women, worlds apart, alters the course of their lives

Tokyo, 1983. When Asa, a Japanese translator, is seated next to a charismatic Argentine named Maricel at a dinner, she is not expecting her life to irrevocably change. Asa is dazzled by Maricel—a woman of passion, poise, and hidden depths—everything Asa wishes she could be. So when Maricel invites her to Buenos Aires, Asa abandons her usual restraint and accepts.

Asa arrives in Argentina as the country emerges from a violent military regime. As the two women quickly grow close, Maricel’s mysterious past comes to light: a missing husband and a brother-in-law, Milo, whose devotion to Maricel feels charged with more than just shared grief.

Carefully navigating the secrets and dynamics of a family and nation that are foreign to her, Asa finds herself increasingly drawn to Milo. Does Asa dare betray her friend’s trust to embrace what she has always dreamed of—a life fully lived in both love and heartbreak?

In rich, sensual prose, Morning Child is a captivating portrait of a woman finding herself in a disappearing world, and a moving testament to the stories we tell about ourselves: how they sustain us, and how they transform us.
