Ranger Academy

Jack Sawyer is skinny, undersized, and about as graceful as a giraffe on roller skates. At Stoneybrook Middle School, he's practically invisible—except to three bullies who make his life miserable.

Jack knows plenty of things, like the names of all the state capitals and how to tell an agate from an ordinary rock. But he doesn't know how to shoot sparks from his fingertips, ride a galloping horse, or wield a sword. And he certainly doesn't know how to track mythical creatures through an enchanted forest.

Until one day, Jack somehow sends a basketball flying through the school gym—without touching it.

Jack has just experienced the Quickening. And it changes everything.

Before he knows it, Jack finds himself at Ranger Academy in the Midwald, a magical world where he'll spend the summer concocting potions, mastering weapons, racing horses, and tracking dangerous creatures through enchanted forests.

But not all is as it seems. Deep in the surrounding forests, deadly creatures are gathering, and dark forces threaten the Midwald. Jack will soon discover that becoming a ranger takes more than a little magic.

Swords, monsters, and sorcery. It's the adventure of a lifetime—if he survives.
