Publisher Description

The World Heritage List withholds nowadays 890 units of cultural and natural heritage, valued as most outstanding, located in 148 states of which 146 had ratified the World Heritage Convention in April 2009.

The worth and variety of cultural monuments on Romanian territory caused the addition of thirty of its most emblematic works of art and architecture to this list. Alongside the Danube Delta, a biosphere reservation already registered in 1991, the churches with outer paintings from Northern Moldavia, the Hurezi Monastery in Wallachia and the village Biertan (Birthälm, Berethalom) with its fortified church were added in 1993; the last entry extended in 1999 with the inclusion of other six settlements from Southern Transylvania. In the same year the historical centre of Sighisoara (Segesvár, Schäßburg), the Dacian fortifications in Orastie Mountains and the wooden churches from Maramures joined the list.
