The People Next Door is an ode to community in all its messy wonder. Roisin Meaney’s novel constructs a web of multilayered, multi-generational relationships, examining the effects of the past on the present and the universal desire for things like love, safety and forgiveness. We loved the tiny idiosyncrasies of each of Meaney’s characters, which makes them far more interesting than labels like longtime widow, recent singleton and overbearing mother-in-law. It’s truly amazing how much drama you can jam-pack into three adjacent homes.
