All her life, Rachel has wanted just one thing: to meet her mother, the woman who abandoned her as a baby. She's spent many years trying to track her down, and now she has a lead. She travels to the mysterious and remote Harlham Hall, and finally she comes face-to-face with Bernard Cassidy and his wife Evelyn.

Rachel soon realizes that something is very wrong at Harlham Hall. Evelyn seems frail and barely able to remember her life, while Bernard drifts from one broken memory to the next. Strange noises ring out in the house at night and a dark presence lurks in the shadows. Rachel and her boyfriend Brad are reluctant to believe that the house is haunted, but if there are no ghosts at Harlham Hall, what other horror might be waiting in the many empty rooms?

Why did Evelyn give Rachel up all those years ago? What is the terrible secret of Harlham Hall? And what awful bargain did Bernard strike when he first feared that he might be about to lose his wife forever?
