La isla de La Española es de naturaleza especial: su gran diversidad de hábitats potenció su capacidad de producir especies nuevas; por eso cuenta con más aves endémicas que cualquier otra isla del Caribe. La mayoría de los dominicanos no hemos podido ver en persona este patrimonio natural. De ahí la importancia de este proyecto: conocer es el primer paso para valorar. La ilustradora estadounidense Alex Warnick elaboró representaciones artísticas fidedignas de 30 bellezas aladas únicas de nuestra isla, con datos históricos y estados de conservación recopilados por un equipo de biólogos y activistas ambientales. Este libro conforma una de las colecciones más hermosas y detalladas que jamás ha existido sobre la naturaleza de La Española.

The island of Hispaniola has quite the special nature: the great diversity in its habitats increased its capacity to produce new species; that’s the reason why it has more endemic birds than any other island on the Caribbean. And yet, many Dominicans haven’t been able to witness with their own eyes the natural heritage that the American Ornithological Society has reported within our territory —a situation that makes preservation rather difficult. That surely reveals the importance of this project: knowing something is the first step towards valuing it. American illustrator Alex Warnick produced 30 lifelike artistic representations of an equal number of local winged beauties, featuring historical information and their respective conservation status compiled by a team of biologists and environmental activists. As a whole, this book provides one of the most beautiful, complete and detailed collection of images about the natural world of Hispaniola —which can contribute to the ongoing protection of our species, as valuing something is the first step towards change.
