Background on DeMar Darnell DeRozan

DeMar Darnell DeRozan is a shooting guard/small forward for the NBA's Toronto Raptors. Born in Compton, California, the 6 foot 7 inch, 220 pound DeRozan started at Compton High School. He played all four years there and averaged over 25 points and 8 rebounds a game. He led his high school to Moore League championships in his junior and senior years and as a senior he won the Moore League MVP award, made the California All-State team, was a 2008 McDonald's All-American, won the McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk contest, and was a first-team Parade All-American. Recruiting services rated him as high as the nation's 3rd best high school player in the class of 2008.

DeRozan attended the University of Southern California. In his one year at the school he was voted to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and was the Pac-10 tournament MVP. What made DeRozan stand out was his versatility. Even though he was a prolific scorer, he also contributed to the team in a number of other ways. He was a terrific rebounder, an excellent passer, and a natural leader. Those skills had NBA teams drooling.

Following his great freshman season at USC, DeRozan declared himself for the 2009 NBA draft. The Toronto Raptors selected him with the 9th overall pick in the first round and has averaged 17.2 points per game in his 6 seasons. His 20 points against the Washington Wizards is currently the team record for most points scored in a quarter in a playoff game. He was also selected to the 2014 NBA All-Star team.
