The Petterils have arranged a reunion of Piers's old university friends at a borrowed country house. But from the beginning, nothing seems quite right. There are barely any servants, and the few remaining are disorderly and insolent. Random items disappear, and eerie noises in the night disturb April's sleep.

April is shocked to meet an unexpected female guest whom Piers seems reluctant to explain. Piers discovers that time has created problems for all his friends. But the real trouble begins with bloodshed in the night, and no one in the house is above suspicion.

Although the Petterils investigate together, is Piers too hampered by friendship to face the truth?
