Captain Kellon is sent to oversee what should be a scientific survey of Earth, now a frozen relic on the edge of extinction, but the mission quickly becomes a circus of broadcasters, bureaucrats, and publicity-seekers eager to turn humanity's birthplace into spectacle. As the ship nears the dead world, he clashes with Borrodale, a famous commentator who stages Earth's history as a grand emotional farewell, while the historian Doctor Darnow represents the quieter, truer hunger to understand what remains. Kellon despises the sentimentality and vanity around him, yet the planet itself begins to change: the ice recedes, seeds sprout, and grass, vines, and flowers return across the silent hills. Wandering alone, Kellon grows strangely at home in Earth's wind and moonlight, and his contempt gives way to reflection on memory, ordinary lives, and the meaning of history. A hidden stone cottage, marked "Ross and Jennie—Their House," and a revived garden of wild flowers deepen his sense that the past lives on in small, human traces. When Borrodale tries to turn the cottage into a final broadcast, Kellon resists, choosing reverence over performance. In the end, he cuts the noise, sends the ship away, and lets Earth die in silence, understanding his grief as a true mourning for all it once was.
