Brown on Resolution

Brown on Resolution is a World War I naval adventure that follows Leading Seaman Albert Brown, a disciplined and quietly heroic sailor in the Royal Navy. Raised with strict moral principles by his single mother, Brown develops a strong sense of duty that guides his actions throughout the novel.

When Brown’s ship, HMS Charybdis, engages a German cruiser, the Ziethen, he is taken prisoner after the battle. The damaged German vessel seeks refuge on the remote island of Resolution to make emergency repairs. Seizing an opportunity, Brown escapes into the island’s rugged terrain with a rifle and begins a one-man campaign to delay the Ziethen’s repairs by sniping at its crew.

Despite hunger, injury, and the overwhelming odds against him, Brown’s persistence slows the Germans long enough for the Royal Navy to locate and destroy the cruiser. His sacrifice—he ultimately dies on the island—proves crucial to the victory.
