The French Revolutionary War, 1793. When the Revolutionaries execute his friend Alan, Gregory Kennett purchases a commission in the 136th Foot.

Marching from siege to skirmish, Kennett learns that war and soldiering is not what he expected. The French seem to have marked his regiment for destruction, but Gregory wonders if they are hunting his cynical, hard drinking company commander, or the French servant he managed to smuggle to safety.
