With rich illustrations by Anishinaabe artist Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley, Gathering the Light is a poignant affirmation of the connection between all beings and the responsibility to care for one another.

In this reflective narrative, former U.S. poet laureate Harjo, a member of the Mvskoke Nation, and Anishinaabe artist Pawis-Steckley (This Is How I Know) portray an Indigenous custom of going out at sunrise "to greet the day,/ To respect, to honor." Saturated digitally painted illustrations depict an Indigenous-cued child heading into a wood, where, as the sun rises, they "gather light in your hands./ Breathe it deep into your being./ Say ‘thank you' in the language/ That speaks your heart best." Subsequent lines describe a practice of noticing the quality of the light, and asking that it bless both loved ones ("that little dog who so faithfully guards you") and the child's individual actions. As the sun reaches its highest point, the lilting second-person text shifts to discuss the work of understanding and embracing one's connection with light and other beings, and, as day transitions toward sundown, of "letting go."
