Mara arrives in Taio's homeland—a place she once thought destroyed. On the outside, all looks peaceful and perfect, but Mara is immediately thrust into danger as the monsters who menaced her land are closer than ever to overtaking Taio's city. And that's not the only threat. Taio's old lover is a rival for his affections and Mara is pursued by the handsome Zulenii men. Even more intriguing, she meets an exiled man from her own country, who tells her a history she desperately doesn't want to believe.

When storm clouds appear in her relationship with Taio, Mara struggles to navigate the new culture alone. She is also tasked with deciphering an ancient scroll containing a mythical cure for the red vein virus. When the cure seems promising, once again Mara and Taio embark on a dangerous mission—this time Mara is the bait. The risks of such a venture are enormous, but with a rival army preparing to attack Taio's people, Mara's time is running out. 

Loyalties are tested, honor is questioned, and friendships are lost. Love cannot conquer all, but will it vanquish the monsters and save this golden kingdom?
