Sentenced to death at 17 by an all-white southern jury, Lewis Pearson, an African-American blind from childhood, defies impossible odds and escapes death row. Abandoned by his escape partner, he meets and cuts a deal with Cob, a grizzled hobo, to help build Cob a house in exchange for help on the run.

Relentlessly pursued by a savage bounty hunter, the unlikely pair arrive at Cob's dream town in a remote corner of New Mexico, where Lewis finds more than just safety—he finds love.

Lewis comes to the edge of his odds—and of his conscience. His sister sets the stage for him to face both his victim's wife, Louella Cheney, and the Law.
