The Dead Are Silent

On a storm-lashed autumn night in Vienna, Franz waits in a shadowed side street for Emma, longing for secrecy to shield their forbidden love. Their reunion is tender but strained, and as their carriage carries them through the Prater and out toward the dark river road, desire gives way to urgency: Franz demands that Emma abandon her life and come openly with him, while Emma hesitates, bound by fear, duty, and concern for her child. The ride grows more perilous as the drunken coachman veers wildly, forcing them onto a bridge and then onward into the night. When the carriage overturns, passion is shattered by catastrophe.
