Publisher Description

American Indian Stories is a book by Native American writer Zitkala-Sa, first published in 1921. It is a collection of childhood stories and articles which tell of the hardships that she and her fellow Native Americans went through at the missionaries and the manual labour schools, which were set up to 'civilise' them. The author wrote several works that chronicled her struggles between her Dakota culture and the culture where she was educated, and she has been recognised as one of the most influential Native American activists of the twentieth century. Chapters include Impressions of an Indian Childhood; The School Days of an Indian Girl; An Indian Teacher Among Indians; The Great Spirit; The Soft-Hearted Sioux; The Trial Path; A Warrior's Daughter; A Dream of Her Grandfather; The Widespread Enigma of Blue-Star Woman; and, America's Indian Problem.
