Family Deepening: A Qualitative Inquiry Into the Experience of Families Who Participate in Service Expeditions (Report‪)‬

Introduction In 1994, the United Nations declared that families are the basic trait of society, and thus require special attention (Bowen & McKechnie, 2002). Subsequently, considerable research over the last 20 years has focused on understanding family dynamics and strengthening families (Doherty, 1997; Freeman & Zabriskie; 2003; Stinett & DeFrain, 1985). Families who are considered to be strong by researchers exhibit qualities such as showing commitment to the family, expressing affection, demonstrating appreciation, engaging in positive communication, working together, and having the ability to cope with stress and crises (Stinett & DeFrain).
