You never know when a New Orleans knife may turn up that was made or sold in New Orleans. If a knife is marked "New Orleans" it is a real find. People are amazed at how important New Orleans was in the 1700 and 1800s. New Orleans was not only a great port for the transshipment of goods, North, West and to countries South of the US, but was also a manufacturing center for a lot of the southern United States. New Orleans was four times larger than the next largest city in the South in 1855. "New Orleans Cutlers Until the 1900s" is a reference book that began eight years ago. The bulk of the research for this book was done before Hurricane Katrina. Some of the records documented in this book were destroyed or damaged in the flood. This book encompasses every newspaper, book, city directory, document and scraps of paper that had anything written about New Orleans cutlers and knife merchants.
